(DALLAS, TX)    This Saturday (January 26, 2013) from 5-7PM Central, The Consumer Team radio program will air a special broadcast focusing on the growing problem of elder abuse.  The Consumer Team is hosted by consumer advocacy journalist Pete Thomson and is heard on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas, Texas.   According to Thomson the elder abuse broadcast is one of the most important investigative programs ever produced by The Consumer Team radio program.   Thomson said, “Consumer Reports has done a thorough investigation into this growing problem.   Listeners will find the facts very troubling.   Older Americans are falling victim to financial scams and fraud in record numbers.  And elder financial abuse often leads to physical abuse.”

Tobie Stanger, a senior editor with Consumer Reports Magazine will join Pete Thomson for the elder abuse investigative reports.   According to Thomson, Stanger’s passion for protecting the elderly was a driving force to the investigation.  Thomson added, “There is no doubt that Tobie Stanger has helped put elder abuse on the radar of Americans.  She spearheaded the Consumer Reports investigation and clearly brings a lot of passion to this discussion.”

According to Consumer Reports, a recent survey of over 2,600 financial planners indicated that 56% of the planners said they knew of older clients who had been subject to unfair, deceptive or abusive practices.  The average financial loss was over $140,000.   Thomson added, “Much of elder abuse goes unreported.   Understandably, victims often feel ashamed and they’re sometimes even motivated to protect the abuser, who is often a family member.   Still, as more and more people are aware of this problem, I believe we can stop much of this abuse.”    Thomson added that The Consumer Team will be giving listeners specific guidance for how to recognize and report cases of elder abuse.  Thomson added, “The Consumer Team is all about solutions.  And in the case of elder abuse, we’ll give our listeners the information and coaching they need to be part of the solution to the elder abuse problem.”
