The Consumer Team: Understanding The Organic Food Scam

Organic….Natural…..Locally Grown.   These words are common in the marketplace because consumers are demanding fresh and healthy.  Natural News estimates that 2014 profits from the sale of organic and natural food were over $35 billion.   Consumers want healthy and we’re willing to pay for it.  The prices of organic food products are often much more than food that doesn’t have the organic seal of approval.  In some cases the price is over 100% more than non-organic products.  The profits from organic food combined with a weak inspection system in the US has resulted in a consumer world where food that is advertised as organic is often far from it.  We’re paying a ton of money for organic food and, oftentimes, getting junk.

The Organic Food Scam - The Consumer Team Investigates

The Organic Food Scam – The Consumer Team Investigates

In 2015, Forbes published an investigation of the organic food industry.  “The Colossal Hoax of Organic Agriculture” is a well researched work that shines a light on a number of issues, including how misinformed the consumer is regarding organic food.  Consider pesticides.  Although it’s generally true that chemical pesticides are prohibited in organic products, there are exceptions including natural pesticides.  Natural pesticides can be toxic.  Another consumer misconception is regarding GMOs, genetically modified organisms.   Consumer perception is that organic means GMO free.  It doesn’t.  As long as organic food is produced using an authorized process (which is not closely inspected), the presence of GMOs in food is not a violation.

So how can this all happen?   Why aren’t testing standards protecting the consumer?  Just follow the money to understand the scam.  The sheer profits that organic food produces, including a super-high premium paid by consumers, has created an incentive for food producers to create a system that is lax and offers plenty of wiggle room.   According to the Forbes study, for the majority of organic products, no tests can determine the difference between organic and non-organic.   And when tests or inspections are present, they’re often incorrect or incomplete.  Forbes cites a 2014 Wall Street Journal investigation that found that almost half of USDA inspection agents failed to uphold USDA standards.   The organic food inspection system is totally loose.   And the organic food lobby is so big and well-funded that their lobbying effort has been successful in preventing any changes to the system.  Show me the money.

The poster child for bad behavior in organic foods is Whole Foods Market.  According to the Forbes investigation, the food retailer was found to be importing large amounts of produce from China. Yes, the same China where the air is not breath-able.  And the Whole Food’s scam gets even better.  They advertised their Chinese “glow-in-the-dark” produce as “California Blend”.

So, what can a consumer do?   First, unless you can personally identify and confirm how a product is produced, packaged and stored, don’t pay a premium for organic.  Beyond that, do research for yourself. Below are several resources we believe are viable:

Lastly, call or write your representatives in Congress.   Let them know that you’re informed regarding the organic food scam, including their complicity in maintaining the corrupt organic food system in the US.

According to Thomson, Sleep Apnea often goes untreated because people don’t understand all the treatment options.   He added, “The CPAP machine is a pretty well known treatment option for Sleep Apnea.   However, it’s no secret that it’s not an easy treatment method.   Many consumers have difficulty  using the machine.  Dr. Smith will be talking about options for treatment that are easier for patients.  Because the new treatments have the potential to save lives, we feel that it’s important to discuss on the air.”

Thomson cited both Dr. Smith’s credentials and innovative approach.  He added, “Dr. Smith is a leading lecturer on sleep disorders.  He’s also been instrumental in bringing new technology to his patients.  In addition to the new methods of treating Sleep Apnea, we’ll discuss new developments in sleep study science that no longer require a mandatory overnight session in a sleep clinic.   We see this new technology and intelligence as positive because it’s removing barriers that previously would serve as a roadblock to people getting treatment for sleep disorders.”

Bed Bugs: Invasion USA

(DALLAS-FT. WORTH)    On Saturday June 14th, The Consumer Team talk radio program will air a special segment regarding the increase of bed bugs in cities across America.   Consumer Team host Pete Thomson said “From what we’re seeing, this problem is quickly becoming serious in many parts of the US.  And for cities with major airports, the spread of bed bugs can be fast and severe.”    Joining Thomson for the broadcast will be Patrick Prather, owner of Entex Pest Solutions.   Prather, an Entomologist and graduate of Texas A&M, is on the front lines of fighting the bed bug invasion.   A number of major cities in Texas have engaged Prather and his company to consult on solutions for city-wide pest issues.

Bed Bugs Invading America

Bed Bugs Invading America

Thomson said that awareness of the bed bug issue is low because of people generally don’t disclose having a problem with the insects.  He added, “Because bed bugs are associated with unclean, low-class hotel rooms, people are reluctant to admit they have a bed bug problem.   But as we’ll discuss on The Consumer Team, the bed bug invasion is effecting everyone.   They’re even found on cruise ships and in 4-star hotels.”

Thomson called Prather a very credible source for solutions to the bed bug problem.  Adding to Prather’s appeal, according to Thomson, is his background in natural pest control.  Thomson said, “Patrick is an expert in natural pest control.   Even though the bug issue is serious, most consumers would prefer not to be exposed to chemicals.   Patrick is known for his abilities in this area.”

Prather also owns Municipal Mosquito, a company that works with cities and counties on the control of mosquitoes.   Thomson added, “When cities are concerned about West Nile Virus, they turn to Municipal Mosquito.  They have the experience and background that cities need to safely and effectively control mosquitoes that can spread West Nile Virus.”

Consumer Team: Don’t Overpay for Hearing Aids

(DALLAS-FT. WORTH, TX)   Consumer advocate Pete Thomson says he was blown away when he investigated the prices of hearing aids.   “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  A pair of hearing aids could cost as much as a car.”    The prices he found motivated Thomson to look deeper into how the hearing aid business operated.  Thomson will report the results of his findings on The Consumer Team, Saturday, April 5th on 1080 KRLD Radio.

Hearing Aid Pricing - The Consumer Team Investigates

Hearing Aid Pricing – The Consumer Team Investigates

“It just didn’t make sense,” Thomson continued, “The prices for electronics are generally falling.   Smart phones, printers, laptops and tablets are getting cheaper while hearing aids still often cost a fortune.  Hearing aids are really not that complicated.  They consist of a speaker, microphone, amplifier and a power source.”   What Thomson found was a consumer world full of middlemen who called themselves specialists.  “They’ve got all kinds of names from hearing specialist to hearing advocate.   Regardless of the title, the markup is significant and not a good deal, especially for older consumers who are often on a fixed income.”

The Consumer Team hearing aid segment will include recommendations for businesses that feature fair pricing on hearing aids.  Thomson said, “If a consumer will shop around, they can find quality without paying too much.  We’ll be talking about several hearing aid outlets that offer quality products, competitive pricing as well as expert consultation.”

The Consumer Team is broadcast Saturdays from 5-7PM (Central) on CBS Radio’s 1080 KRLD in Dallas.  The Consumer Team is one of the most listened to locally produced consumer advocacy programs in the nation.   The Consumer Team is produced by McQ Media, Dallas, Texas.

BioTE Medical Receives Consumer Team CISQUA Award

(DALLAS-FT. WORTH, TX)  BioTE Medical has been presented the CISQUA Award by The Consumer Team for pioneering best practices in the field of natural hormone replacment for men and women.  Pete Thomson, founder/CEO of The Consumer Team, announced the award today.  The CISQUA Award recognizes exemplary corporate performance in areas of integrity, service, quality and accountability.

Dr. Gary Donovitz, founder and medical director of BioTE Medical, commented on the award.  He said, “We’re honored to receive this recognition.  The Consumer Team has a reputation for being very selective regarding the companies that they endorse and we’re thrilled to receive The CISQUA Award.

Dr. Gary Donovitz - BioTE Medical

Dr. Gary Donovitz – BioTE Medical

Pete Thomson said The CISQUA Award presented to BioTE Medical reflects the contributions that the company has made in the field of natural testosterone replacement.   Thomson added, “Hormone replacement and specifically testosterone replacement therapy are hot topics for consumers right now.  We believe that BioTE Medical’s all natural approach to hormone replacement is the safest and most effective way for both men and women to balance hormones.  Because of the significant issues that accompany the use of synthetic hormones, we believe that consumers need to understand how the natural approach used by BioTE Medical can be beneficial and very different than synthetic therapies.”

Thomson said that the marketplace is generally very confused about hormone replacement therapy, largely because of inaccurate media coverage.  He added, “The media understands half the story, which is that synthetic hormones, the ones you see advertised heavily on television, have a long list of negative side effects.  However, they haven’t grasped the difference between synthetic and natural hormones.”

Dr. Donovitz cited numerous research studies that support the use of natural testosterone replacement.  He added, “There are years of research and studies that support natural hormone replacement therapy.  In fact, we have multiple studies that show that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is protective to the prostate, heart, brain and breast.  The benefits to the patients, both men and women, allow for healthier lives as people age and they require fewer drugs for disease management.”

The growth of BioTE Medical has been steady and impressive.  According to BioTE Medical’s COO, Dan DeNeui, the company has grown to over 500 certified practitioners in 26 states.  DeNeui said, “Our growth has been exciting.  People are experiencing better health.  Plus, our practitioners, many of whom have been frustrated by the limitations of managed care, are excited to be able to offer the great benefits of BioTE to their patients.”

Beyond the advantages of BioTE’s natural approach to hormone therapy, Thomson cited their organization and network of medical practitioners as major assets.  He said, “BioTE Medical’s commitment to on-going training is very impressive.  And, the quality of physicians utilizing the BioTE Method in their practice is outstanding.”

Consumer Advocate Pete Thomson: Healthcare Scams Targeting Retirees

(DALLAS-FT. WORTH, TX)     New healthcare laws have brought much uncertainty to consumers, especially retirees.  According to consumer advocacy journalist and radio host Pete Thomson, new scams are surfacing that are taking advantage of the uncertainty in the marketplace.   Thomson’s weekly radio program, which airs on CBS Radio’s KRLD in Dallas, will focus on healthcare scams on Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 5-7PM (Central).

Pete Thomson - The Consumer Team

Thomson said that the new healthcare scams are reaching consumers primarily through the internet and telemarketing.   He added, “Scammers are targeting seniors.  They’ll often call or email, claiming to be with the federal government, and say they need to confirm a social security number.  Other times they’ll call offering a special deal on low cost healthcare coverage.   The scammers are always looking for personal information that they can turn into cash.”

Thomson claims that the uncertainty surrounding healthcare is helping the scammers succeed.  He said, “Our nation’s healthcare system is about to be in transition and people, especially retirees, are concerned about the future of their healthcare.  The people behind the scams love this uncertainty.   They’re selling security and solutions in a very uncertain environment.”

According to Thomson, the first line of defense again healthcare scams is to simply hang up or delete the email.   Beyond that, he says, reaching out to seniors who are isolated is very important.   Thomson added, “Seniors often become isolated from the mainstream marketplace.  We believe that reaching out to seniors in our families and neighborhoods is an important part of defeating this type of crime.”

Thomson credited Consumer Team New York City reporter Ernie Sprance for his contributions to the special coverage on healthcare scams.   He said, “Ernie did an outstanding job of digging into this issue.  He’ll be filing two different on-air reports on The Consumer Team.   After listening to this information, listeners will be better prepared to deal with this growing fraud.”

Thomson’s Consumer Team talk radio program is one of the most listened to local programs dealing with consumer news, research, trends and issues.   Thomson says that his passion for consumer advocacy started during his childhood growing up in the midwest.   Both of his parents were business owners in Charles City, Iowa.  According to Thomson, seeing successful business and customer relationships fueled his interest in helping connect consumers with reputable business owners.  He said, “Growing up in Charles City, I saw the special relationship that can exist between business and the customer.  Our goal on The Consumer Team is to first educate our listeners regarding the issues that can impact their success as a consumer.  Beyond that, we strive to connect our listeners with great businesses who truly understand what it means to serve the customer.”

Hearing Aids: Why So Expensive?

(DALLAS, TX)      Americans spend billions annually on technology designed to improve hearing.  And as baby boomers have become candidates for hearing aids, there are more makes and models than ever before.   The price on custom hearing aids can exceed that of a new car.   On Saturday, February 16, 2013, The Consumer Team radio program will air a special segment focusing on getting a better value on hearing aids.  The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM (Central) on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Saving Money on Hearing Aids: The Consumer Team Investigates

According to Consumer Team host Pete Thomson, the goal of the segment is to educate the consumer regarding the choices that exist in the marketplace.  Thomson commented, “My dad recently spent a considerable sum of money on hearing aids.  His experience put this category on my personal radar.  When I did some investigation into the hearing aid industry I was amazed to see how expensive the devices are.  Hearing aids can cost more than a car.”  Thomson added that the pricing in the hearing aid industry didn’t make sense to him.   He continued, “The high prices of hearing aids run contrary to the price trend for other technology.   Think about it, generally the prices for technology such as cell phones, computers and other electronics is dropping.  The pricing model for hearing aids make no sense, especially when you consider that the device basically consists of a speaker, microphone and an amplifier.  It should be going down and not up.”

Thomson says that The Consumer Team will have good news for consumers.  Thomson said, “Like all consumer items, if you search, there are ways to get a better value for your dollar.  On The Consumer Team we will talk about several sources that give consumers much more for their hearing aid dollar.”

The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM Saturdays on 1080 KRLD in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas.  KRLD is the leading news station in the Dallas-Ft.
