Consumer Team: Heating & Air Conditioning Buying Tips

(DALLAS, TX)      Recently a high profile Dallas-Ft. Worth heating and air conditioning system went out of business.   What made this company unique was their reputation in the marketplace for promising deep discounts.   Competitors of the company questioned their ability to actually deliver advertised discounts.   In the wake of the company’s demise are thousands of consumers who are left with worthless maintenance contracts.   The Consumer Team radio program will be referencing this situation in a special segment to be aired Saturday, February 23, 2013 from 5-7PM (Central) on KRLD Radio, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas.

The Consumer Team - Saturdays 5-7 PM - KRLD Radio

Pete Thomson, host of The Consumer Team and President/CEO of McQ Media Inc, said the segments will help consumers on a number of levels.  Thomson stated, “Our first concern is for the consumers who lost money on service contracts or air conditioning systems.  We want to help those people.  We will also address what constitutes a good deal on a heating and air conditioning system.  Beyond that, we will address the notion of big promises being made in advertising.   As the old bromide goes, ‘If something seems to go to be true it usually is.'”

Joining Thomson on The Consumer Team will be John Downs and Mark Wissler of Dallas Plumbing Company.   John Downs serves at president of Dallas Plumbing Company.  Mark Wissler is the company’s service manager.  Commenting on Dallas Plumbing, Thomson said, “In researching this story we spoke to a number of professionals in home improvement, plumbing and air conditioning.   We asked the team from Dallas Plumbing to join us because of their tenure in the marketplace and the universal respect that consumers have for this company.  Dallas Plumbing was founded in 1903.  They’ve served generations of consumers in North Texas.   They are experts at plumbing, heating and air conditioning.  And they’re in a very credible position to give guidance on how consumers can get a fair deal on a heating and air conditioning system.”

Thomson praised Dallas Plumbing for their willingness to help consumers who are holding worthless service contracts.  Thomson added, “I’m impressed by a number of things regarding Dallas Plumbing.  They represent the values that we believe in on The Consumer Team.  And, on the program they’ll be making an offer to people who have been burned by the company that went out of business.”

The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM Saturdays on 1080 KRLD in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas.  KRLD is the leading news station in the Dallas-Ft. Hearing Aids: Why So Expensive?

(DALLAS, TX)      Americans spend billions annually on technology designed to improve hearing.  And as baby boomers have become candidates for hearing aids, there are more makes and models than ever before.   The price on custom hearing aids can exceed that of a new car.   On Saturday, February 16, 2013, The Consumer Team radio program will air a special segment focusing on getting a better value on hearing aids.  The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM (Central) on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas-Ft. Worth.

Saving Money on Hearing Aids: The Consumer Team Investigates

According to Consumer Team host Pete Thomson, the goal of the segment is to educate the consumer regarding the choices that exist in the marketplace.  Thomson commented, “My dad recently spent a considerable sum of money on hearing aids.  His experience put this category on my personal radar.  When I did some investigation into the hearing aid industry I was amazed to see how expensive the devices are.  Hearing aids can cost more than a car.”  Thomson added that the pricing in the hearing aid industry didn’t make sense to him.   He continued, “The high prices of hearing aids run contrary to the price trend for other technology.   Think about it, generally the prices for technology such as cell phones, computers and other electronics is dropping.  The pricing model for hearing aids make no sense, especially when you consider that the device basically consists of a speaker, microphone and an amplifier.  It should be going down and not up.”

Thomson says that The Consumer Team will have good news for consumers.  Thomson said, “Like all consumer items, if you search, there are ways to get a better value for your dollar.  On The Consumer Team we will talk about several sources that give consumers much more for their hearing aid dollar.”

Consumer Team Endorses Blue Nail Roofing

(DALLAS, TX)       The Consumer Team radio program announced that Eric Thomason of Blue Nail Roofing will be joining the program as an expert contributor and sponsor.   The selection of Blue Nail Roofing ends an exhaustive search for program host and producer Pete Thomson.   He commented, “We looked at several roofing companies to join The Consumer Team.   We’re very pleased to have Eric Thomason and his team at Blue Nail joining us on the broadcast.  When we call a sponsor ‘Consumer Team Certified’ it means that they’re our selection as the best that Dallas-Ft. Worth has to offer.   In our opinion Blue Nail Roofing is a quality roofing company that does outstanding work for their customers.”

Blue Nail Roofing: The Choice of The Consumer Team

Blue Nail Roofing owner Eric Thomason is a Dallas-Ft. Worth native and second generation roofing professional.   Thomson said that Eric Thomason’s background was an important factor in his selection to The Consumer Team.   Thomson said, “Eric learned professional roofing at a young age and now has made a career in a field that he knows well.”   Thomson also commented on other criteria that The Consumer Team used to select Blue Nail.  He continued, “Blue Nail has a long list of satisfied customers.  Eric is out in the field every day making sure that customers are well served and we really like that.  Also, Blue Nail’s brick-and-mortar location in Dallas is also important.   When storms occur, out of town roofers called ‘Storm Chasers’ come into storm areas looking for a quick buck.  When it comes to roofing and good service after the sale, doing business with a local roofing company is vital.”

According to Pete Thomson, the quality of Blue Nail Roofing’s employees was a major factor in their selection for The Consumer Team.   Thomson added, “Eric is very picky about the people he hires at Blue Nail Roofing.  While many roofers literally hire their workers off of street corners, Blue Nail Roofing uses trained professionals.   Better people result in a much better job for the consumer.”   Thomson also cited Blue Nail Roofing’s capabilities in a variety of home repair jobs.   Thomson said, “When storms hit Texas, homeowners often experience roof damage as well as damage to other areas of their home.  Blue Nail Roofing is also a full service contractor and can repair fences, gutters, siding and almost anything other damage that can occur to a home.”

According to Thomson, Eric Thomason will be a regular special guest on The Consumer Team radio program.  Segment topics will include best practices in the roofing industry, working with insurance companies, avoiding roofing scams and other topics of interest.

The Big Scam: Scambook.com & Clean Your PC Programs

(DALLAS, TX)     Consumer Team host Pete Thomson calls the internet a modern day version of the “wild, wild west”.   According to Thomson, “It’s like Dodge City in the 1800s.  Every day the medicine wagon rolls into town with a different deal, and every one of them are guaranteed to make you rich, debt free and with a full head of hair to boot.  The modern day internet scammer makes Mr. Haney (from the Green Acres TV sitcom) look like Andrew Carnegie”   It’s so bad, according to Thomson, that The Consumer Team radio program is be dedicating airtime to exposing what he calls, The Big Scam.

The Consumer Team is Exposing 'The Big Scam'

Pete Thomson is a veteran consumer advocacy journalist.   He’s hosted consumer radio programs for over a decade.  His current program, The Consumer Team, is heard Saturdays on KRLD Radio, Dallas, Texas.   Thomson says he’s been critical of scams for years but that the proliferation of internet-based hoaxes has motivated him to increase his program’s focus on bad consumer deals.  Thomson added, “I grew up in Charles City, Iowa in the 1960s.  Back then, life and especially your consumer life, was pretty simple.  You shopped locally, knew all the retailers and when something broke the business owner made things right.   Now, and largely because of the web, the scammers can hide behind websites that look honest and upstanding on the surface.  Dig a little deeper and the evil starts to show.”

On recent Consumer Team broadcasts, Thomson cited several web-based business models that he thinks are questionable.   Thomson voiced concern about the many services offering to clean up and speed up personal computers.  Thomson said, “A good number of these companies are a fraud.  We interviewed Andrew Cunningham with www.arstechnica.com, a leading tech website.  His recent article confirmed our suspicions that many of the companies advertising to improve PC speed and remove malware are ineffective or even malware themselves.”   Thomson added that many of these scam offers are targeting older consumers through talk radio and late night television.   Click here to read Cunningham’s article from arstechnia.com

The Consumer Team is also critical of a consumer gripe site called Scambook.com   Thomson called Scambook’s business model ‘very troubling.’  He added, “On the surface Scambook.com looks like the good guys.  They’re giving disgruntled consumers a forum to complain about bad deals from retailers.  However, dig a little deeper and you discover that Scambook is really a business that’s built to profit from requiring businesses to pay high fees in order to get negative consumer comments removed from the Scambook.com website.   Even more suspicious looking is the fact that one of Scambook’s founders is an attorney who works in class action lawsuits.”     For more information on Scambook’s business model and the mounting number of complaints being made about the business, Thomson recommends watching a recent investigative report from WMAQ-TV, Chicago.   Thomson said, “The WMAQ piece was well done.  It shines a light on these guys and exposes the truth.”   Thomson added that there are numerous sites devoted to exposing Scambook’s business practices.

So what is Thomson asking consumers to do?    Thomson commented, “The first thing all of us need to do is dig deeper on any business we’re about to do business with.  Slick websites and award-winning commercials can make any company look legitimate.  Consumers can avoid so much heartache and pain in their consumer life by slowing down and doing their research.   Information is power, especially when you’re trying to stay ahead of the scams.  I invite everyone to use our website as a resource.  And if that doesn’t work, email me.  The Consumer Team is here to help the consumer.”
