Jim Poe - Texas Retirement Specialists

(DALLAS, TX)        Pete Thomson, host and producer of The Consumer Team radio program, announced that Jim Poe and Texas Retirement Specialists will be the exclusive financial and retirement planning planner for The Consumer Team.   The Consumer Team is heard Saturdays from 5-7PM on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas/Ft. Worth.   Commenting about the announcement, Thomson said, “Through the years I’ve had an opportunity to meet hundreds of financial planners and Jim Poe is by far the most honest, hardworking and giving person I’ve every met in the financial services industry.  We are very fortunate to have him as an expert on retirement and financial planning on The Consumer Team.”

As The Consumer Team’s exclusive financial and retirement planning expert, Jim Poe will make regular appearances on The Consumer Team radio program.  According to Thomson, financial questions top the list of listener questions.   Thomson added, “The Consumer Team audience is primarily 35 and older.  These are people who have been working hard for a number of years.  And getting solid, credible advice on retirement strategies is very important to them.   The addition of Jim Poe to our program gives our listeners access to a person who is really looking out for their best interest.”

Thomson calls Poe and his company Texas Retirement Specialists the best possible source of information for listeners.  Thomson added, “Most people don’t realize that many who call themselves financial planners don’t have to work in the client’s best interest.   In fact, many product sales people call themselves financial planners but in reality are just sales people trying to sell the product that pays them the highest commission.  Because Jim Poe and Texas Retirement Specialists have a fiduciary duty to their clients, our listeners can be confident that Jim is making recommendations that are in their best interest.”   Regarding his fiduciary responsibility to his clients, Poe said, “We have an obligation to present our clients the solutions that are the best choice from their perspective.   Since most of our clients are over 50, we look for ways to make a good return but without the risk of the stock market.”

According to Thomson, the family aspect of Texas Retirement Specialists is a big appeal to people.  Thomson said, “Texas Retirement Specialists is a family owned and operated business.  Jim and Dauph Poe and 4 of their daughters own the firm.  And when you step foot into their offices in either Dallas or Ft. Worth, you feel like you’ve come home.  It’s  an amazingly comfortable feeling.”

Thomson also praised the manner in which Jim Poe and Texas Retirement Specialists interact with their clients.  Thomson said, “Jim and his team are very low pressure.  In both their group financial planning meetings or in individual sessions, they are very, very good listeners.  And their proprietary software that they use to track a person’s income until age 100 is extraordinary. ”

Unlike many financial planning firms, Texas Retirement Specialists does not have a minimum of net worth requirement for clients.  In fact, according to Thomson, “If a client has any savings at all, Jim Poe and the Texas Retirement Specialists team will help them.   And in a world where some financial planners won’t even talk with you unless you have a million dollars, Jim Poe helps people regardless of how much money they have.   He has a real servant’s heart.”

According to Pete Thomson, working with Jim Poe and his family team at Texas Retirement Specialists, has changed his life.  Thomson said, “Last year my son and I had a chance to join Jim Poe and his family to prepare dinner for 60 people at The Ronald McDonald House of Ft. Beyond supporting The Shriners Hospitals and The Ronald McDonald House, Jim Poe says that the Texas Retirement Specialists team will be helping some additional charities as the year goes on.  He said, “We always do a number of important charity projects at Christmas.  And this year will be no different.  It blesses us to bless others.”

Elder Abuse: The Consumer Team Investigates

(DALLAS, TX)    This Saturday (January 26, 2013) from 5-7PM Central, The Consumer Team radio program will air a special broadcast focusing on the growing problem of elder abuse.  The Consumer Team is hosted by consumer advocacy journalist Pete Thomson and is heard on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas, Texas.   According to Thomson the elder abuse broadcast is one of the most important investigative programs ever produced by The Consumer Team radio program.   Thomson said, “Consumer Reports has done a thorough investigation into this growing problem.   Listeners will find the facts very troubling.   Older Americans are falling victim to financial scams and fraud in record numbers.  And elder financial abuse often leads to physical abuse.”

Tobie Stanger, a senior editor with Consumer Reports Magazine will join Pete Thomson for the elder abuse investigative reports.   According to Thomson, Stanger’s passion for protecting the elderly was a driving force to the investigation.  Thomson added, “There is no doubt that Tobie Stanger has helped put elder abuse on the radar of Americans.  She spearheaded the Consumer Reports investigation and clearly brings a lot of passion to this discussion.”

According to Consumer Reports, a recent survey of over 2,600 financial planners indicated that 56% of the planners said they knew of older clients who had been subject to unfair, deceptive or abusive practices.  The average financial loss was over $140,000.   Thomson added, “Much of elder abuse goes unreported.   Understandably, victims often feel ashamed and they’re sometimes even motivated to protect the abuser, who is often a family member.   Still, as more and more people are aware of this problem, I believe we can stop much of this abuse.”    Thomson added that The Consumer Team will be giving listeners specific guidance for how to recognize and report cases of elder abuse.  Thomson added, “The Consumer Team is all about solutions.  And in the case of elder abuse, we’ll give our listeners the information and coaching they need to be part of the solution to the elder abuse problem.”

The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM Saturdays on 1080 KRLD in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas.  KRLD is the leading news station in the Dallas-Ft. Consumer Team: Training for New Gun Owners

(Dallas, TX)   As gun sales skyrocket across the country, new gun owners are searching for information on gun training and gun safety.  The Consumer Team talk radio program is responding with a series of segments designed to help new gun owners find resources for information and training.  Tiger McKee, nationally known firearms training expert, will be a featured guest on The Consumer Team, Saturday, January 19th from 5-7PM (Central) on 1080 KRLD Radio, Dallas.   Pete Thomson, executive producer and host of The Consumer Team, commented on McKee’s appearance, “We know that there are many thousands of new gun owners in the marketplace.  These are people who have recently purchased a gun, most likely a handgun which will be kept in their home.  Our goal on The Consumer Team is to give these people information on both gun training and safety.  And, we’re excited to have Tiger McKee on the program.”

Tiger McKee - Director of Shootrite Firearms Academy

Tiger McKee is Director of Shootrite Firearms Academy, a fire arms training organization offering online, video and on-site firearms training.  Thomson added, “Tiger McKee is a valuable resource to our listeners because of his depth of knowledge.  He’s effective teaching both new and experienced students.  For new students, Shootrite features basic training and safety instruction.  And for more advanced students, Shootrite Firearms Academy is well respected as an excellent training resource.”

Thomson said that future segments on firearms safety, training and personal protection are being planned for The Consumer Team.  Thomson added, “We’re going to spend a lot of time on gun safety because it’s such an important part of handling firearms.  Beyond that it’s clear that our listeners want information on being more secure in their homes.  To address this need, we will be interviewing other personal protection and self defense experts including law enforcement officials in future programs.  To me, a big part of the discussion on personal protection and firearms training needs to center around ways to avoid ever having to use a gun.   And as people get better and more thoroughly trained they can become more skilled in methods of staying safe without having to fire a gun.”

The Consumer Team is broadcast from 5-7PM Saturdays on 1080 KRLD in Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas.  KRLD is the leading news station in the Dallas-Ft. Growing Up On Main Street Impacts Consumer Radio Host

(DALLAS, TEXAS)   Listen to consumer advocacy talk radio host Pete Thomson any weekend and you’re likely to hear him bring up his hometown, Charles City, Iowa.   A town of about 8,000 in Northeast Iowa, Charles City is a picturesque river town filled with historic turn-of-the-century homes.  Thomson lived in Charles City, or Chuck Town as the locals call it, in the 1960s.

Many of Pete Thomson’s Charles City comments relate back to his time working at his father’s Ben Franklin Store.   He describes his experience as being able to be in business school while still in grade school.  Thomson added,  “Both of my parents had their own retail businesses.  My mom owned a children’s clothing store and dad had the Ben Franklin.   From a very early age, all of us kids were involved in both stores and had the opportunity to see how the retail business worked from the inside.”

Most of Thomson’s time at The Ben Franklin Store was spent as a bag boy and cashier.  It was during this time that Thomson says he began to develop an interest in studying consumer behavior.   Thomson stated, “At the check out counter I had a chance to observe customers on a number of levels.  You see how they make shopping decisions, how they handle money and how they determined value.   It was an extraordinary opportunity for me to observe consumer behavior at a very young age.”

Customer satisfaction was a priority for both of his parents according to Thomson.  He said, “In a small town you’ve got to take care of the customer.  Both my mom and dad’s stores had very customer friendly return policies.  For the most part it was a no questions asked return policy.   As a result of this policy, customers were very, very loyal.”  Thomson added, “The way that my parents served the customer established a very high standard and expectation for customer service in my life.”

Another aspect of small-town life was availability of quality tradesmen for home repair and construction.  And in Charles City, according to Thomson, it didn’t take long for word to get out if a business was not honest or consumer friendly.  Thomson added, “Small towns were the original social networks.  People talk and word travels fast.  It kept people honest.”

In 1972, Thomson left his position at Ben Franklin to work for the local radio station as an announcer.   At KCHA Radio, Thomson says, he continued to learn about consumerism and consumer behavior.  Thomson said, “Local radio is the voice of small business.  At KCHA, I got a chance to see how marketing and advertising impacted a small business.  I also learned the connection between promises made in advertising and the actual delivery of that promise.”

Even though Thomson’s broadcasting career took him far away from Charles City, he says his small town ‘Main Street’ roots have impacted his broadcasting and consumer journalism career.  Thomson said, “In broadcast sales and marketing, I had a great deal of natural empathy for the small business owner because of my family’s history in business.   As a consumer advocate and radio host, my roots on Main Street set my internal standard bar very high.   Put another way, in small town Main Street America, the consumer-business relationship is special.”
